EVE Online Fanfest 2011 roundup: Day 3

The third and final day of festivities at the massive EVE Online Fanfest has come to an end, and it was definitely worth waiting for. There were several round-table discussions and events going on today, but the event everyone was looking forward to was definitely the “CCP Presents” talk in the afternoon. With yesterday’s keynote speech wrapping up all the awesome plans CCP has for EVE this year, it wasn’t certain exactly what had been saved for today’s show. Yesterday we heard details of the Incarna captain’s quarters, server upgrades, new turret effects, new nebulae and more.

Highlights of today included a round-table discussion on how CCP would be linking EVE with DUST 514, the hilarious finals of the Fanfest PvP tournament and the CCP Presents feature. This was followed by the CCP panel, in which developers answered questions from the audience. Having spent three days watching developers talk about the future of EVE, I get the distinct impression that many of them have as much passion for EVE as even the most fanatical EVE players.

Read on for a roundup of what happened today at the EVE Fanfest, along with detailed explanations of a few personal highlights from today and the Fanfest in general.

Saturday’s events

Today had a number of round-table events, which act kind of as focus groups for upcoming features, problems seen in EVE or things CCP is discussing internally. The round-table for the EVE-DUST link was an interesting discussion among players on what they’d want to see when the game approaches the end of development.

Some great ideas were thrown around, and the general consensus was that players wanted to see very real, meaningful interactions between DUST and EVE players. The fact that CCP hadn’t considered some of the ideas suggested means that DUST probably isn’t very far in development and we shouldn’t expect a release date for some time.

Other discussions focused on EON Magazine, planetary interaction, the character creator, research, EVE Gate, lowsec, EVE’s user interface, EVE voice, artificial intelligence and third-party development. Other events included the GM panel, a showing of EVE videos and presentations on GMs, live events, and the art of EVE. Big events today included the PvP finals, the CCP Presents feature and the CCP panel.

Personal highlights: CCP Presents

Each year, CCP reveals its theme for the coming year at Fanfest. Last year’s theme was “Excellence,” which caused some friction when the company’s definition of excellence differed from that of players. With Incarna, DUST 514 and the World of Darkness MMO all heavily in development, this year’s theme of “Deliver” sends a strong message. By this time next year, we’ll see just how much CCP has delivered on that message. The presentation was filled with some pretty cringe-worthy parody videos designed mostly to get a laugh out of the crowd and show that CCP as a company doesn’t take itself too seriously.

One of the big focuses of the event was CCP’s new Carbon technology framework. A lot of the company’s development time over the past year or so has gone into Carbon, which provides the underlying technology required for Incarna, DUST 514 and World of Darkness. CCP’s developers are understandably proud of Carbon, as they call it their competitive edge in the industry. With all of the ground work done for Carbon, they can hopefully now live up to this year’s company message and deliver Incarna, DUST and WoD. CCP also revealed that one million ISK (the Icelandic currency, not the EVE currency) had been raised for charity by Friday’s chessboxing event.

Personal highlights: CCP Presents a vision for the future

The absolute best parts of the show were the three EVE-related videos that were shown. We saw new turret effects, new nebula graphics and an incredible new vision trailer for the future. If CCP can deliver even half of what’s in that video over the next five years, it’s going to be incredible.

At this stage, however, we’re always wary of vision trailers. The team set a target for future development, but those targets may never be reached and concepts shown in them might be drastically changed during the development process. CCP t0rfifrans went on to describe some further visions for the future of EVE. After the release of captain’s quarters, the next stage of Incarna will contain station interiors and customisable player-run “establishments.”

CCP’s vision for the future is that we’ll be able to walk and fight on everything from planets to starbases. Torfi imagines docking with a Sleeper databank in a wormhole site and fighting the Sleeper drones inside, only to be ambushed by players who docked there earlier and have your ship destroyed while you’re in the structure. It’s an awesome vision, but since several visions presented at Fanfest haven’t panned out (such as planetary flight, planetary interaction, Ambulation and Incarna), discussion on vision is usually taken with a rather large grain of salt. I want to get excited about this, and I’d love for CCP to actually deliver on this clear vision, but until I see more than vision trailers and conceptual discussions, I’ll remain a little sceptical.

Personal highlights: The EVE community

Seeing the enthusiasm of certain developers was pretty inspiring, and the information released this year has been promising. The captain’s quarters coming in the summer expansion could be just what EVE needs to increase the retention of new players, and CCP is obviously very proud of what it’s accomplished up until now.

While this is refreshing, the talks and presentations were not the best thing about the Fanfest. It’s the players I’ve met, and the discussions I’ve had with them, that have been the high-point of Fanfest for me. I can see why CCP runs an event like this every year, because finding people as passionate about EVE as I am has been an envigorating experience. This article is out late tonight because I’ve been completely absorbed in discussion with some really awesome guys.

The fun of playing with LEGO sets is only half in the assembly — a lot of the enjoyment comes with showing off what you’ve created to others, no matter your age. It’s an element that LEGO Universe has taken to heart, as a recent release talks about the community events the game has run thus far and the plans for more events in the future.

    flyff penya
    lineage 2 adena
    maplestory mesos

Each month of the game’s operation has been based around a core theme for community events and challenges, giving players unified goals to work toward. March is the Battle Month, with the final event taking place this weekend in the Battle for Nimbus Station. Players who successfully face off against 29 waves of enemies will be in the running to win a variety of in-game prizes as well as some real-world LEGO sets.

The Creation Lab has also been a major area of development, allowing user-generated content to come front and center in the community. Even if you’re not currently playing LEGO Universe, you can take part in some of the contests and get your own buildings in the game — sharing what you’ve built with everyone even if it’s not made out of plastic bricks.

Nexon’s Dungeon Fighter Online coming to Xbox Live Arcade

The MMO console line-up just got a bit bigger thanks to the folks at Nexon and Softmax. The latter is porting the former’s Dungeon Fighter Online beat-’em-up to the Xbox Live Arcade delivery platform, where the title will boast a freemium business model (meaning you download the client for free and pay for items and upgrades).

Nexon and Microsoft are splitting localization duties as the game will be released in eight languages worldwide. The console title — Nexon’s first — will be exclusive to the 360. DFO features six character classes (with subclasses available at level 18) and further advancement possible at level 48 via an awakening quest.

Massively’s EVE Online CSM 6 candidate roundup

Beginning life as a humble indie MMO development studio, CCP Games was always noted for its close relationship to the players of its flagship game EVE Online. That relationship diminished a lot over time as both the size of the playerbase and the scale of EVE’s development grew to immense proportions. Today CCP depends on players to guide development over ever, but it needs a lens through which to focus feedback from such a huge community of players in to a form that the team can use. The democratically chosen Council of Stellar Management (CSM) is that lens.

Fifty-seven players submitted their applications to join EVE’s chosen player council this year, and all this week, players have been voting to pick who will represent them in discussions with CCP. With so lots of candidates in the jogging and only two more days to make up your mind, it can be hard to pick one individual from the list. To help you pick, Massively has compiled a full list of every applicant in the jogging along with a short message about his or her campaign and handy links to obtainable campaign resources.

When you are prepared to vote, follow this link to the voting page, log in, and click the vote button to the right of your selected candidate. Keep in mind to get your vote in before March 23rd when polls close! The results will be published on March 30th, and we’ll find out who will be representing the EVE playerbase to CCP for the approaching year.

    Cabal alz
    runescape gold
    maplestory mesos

This is a huge year for CCP, which is gearing up to finally release Incarna and its revolutionary jogging in stations feature. It is imperative that the sixth council be made up of sensible individuals who can deliver reasonable feedback on Incarna and represent player issues without bias or personal ambition. The past few years have shown that the CSM is not usually able to push ideas and solutions at CCP. Candidates who have an interest in making specific changes have been unable to follow through on campaign promises, while those able to representing the whole playerbase in an unbiased manner have made a huge contribution to the council.

Why ought to I vote?

There has been a growing perception over the past two months or so that the CSM is being taken seriously at CCP. Several ex-employees of CCP have even entered their names in the jogging, recognising that they may be better able to improve the game as part of a player-elected council than they could have as an worker within the company. The CSM can make a actual difference to EVE, and every vote absolutely counts.

In this three-page candidate roundup, they have split the 57 candidates up in to the same two groups as last year — returning members, new campaigners, and comparatively unknown characters with small campaign material or who are not taking the election seriously. Next to each campaigner, we have included a brief synopsis of his or her campaign information and links to any relevant campaign materials that might help you make your decision.

Last year, 17 members of earlier council sessions submitted their applications for candidacy. This was due chiefly to the removal of the mandatory two-term limit, which encouraged historicallyin the past successful candidates to give the council another shot. This year, only two candidates have served as members of earlier councils. Trebor Daehdoow, a 52 year elderly veteran of the programming industry, played an integral role in the fifth CSM and is standing for reelection this year. Meissa Anunthiel has served in the council a whopping two times now — as an alternate in CSM 2 and 4, and a full member of councils 3 and 5.

Helen Highwater has played the role of alternate in CSM 4 and 5 and is hoping that this experience will be useful in a full council stool. Similarly, Issler Dainze served as a full member in CSM 2 and an alternate in CSM 3. They didn’t recieve votes to get a council or alternate stool in the earlier term, but is back in the jogging this year for another attempt. Sokratesz was a full member of CSM 4 and 5 and is hoping to be re-elected for a third term jogging.

Perhaps the largest surprise this year is that several ex-CCP employees have signed up to the council. Veteran game designer CCP Abathur, also called Seleene, was present within CCP in the coursework of the formation of the council and sees it as the only way left to get the players message across to the company’s management. CCP Lingorm of the QA Engineering team has also applied, hoping that his experiences within CCP will give him a competitive edge.

The MMO Report: Guilds, crafting, and craft beer edition

It’s St. Patrick’s day, and what better time to discuss craft beers on The MMO Report than today? Mind you, for those of you who don’t imbibe frosty adult beverages, there’s also a huge serving of corned MMO news, and the lilting smell of cabbage you’re picking up… is probably coming from the mailbag. Shall we move on to the tasty news of the week? Let’s!

First up, Casey jumps straight on to the Guild Wars 2 news that many have been buzzing about this week: professions! Next up, it’s Star Wars: The Old Republic’s trailer made of completely delicious in-game footage, as well as the ongoing rush to get guilds set up before launch. Casey zooms straight into Jagex’s partnership with Hasbro to create the upcoming Transformers MMO for the West, and he notes that Free Realms on PS3 will probably be just as popular as it is on PC.

Casey also takes a moment to note the Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV server downtime and asks anyone who can to please donate to help those in Japan. Moving on from there, it’s a look into the ever-enlightening mailbag, where this week Casey is both praised and derided for his choice in beers and we are treated to another dose of photoshop magic. Finally, it is revealed that G4TV landed an exclusive fly-over of Perfect World International’s new area, Dragon Mountain.

DC Universe Online devotes a new trailer to villainous safehouses maplestory mesos
    Cabal alz
    flyff penya

It’s a hard life, being a villain. Everyone always expects you to be up to no good, fencing stolen goods and generally behaving on the wrong side of the law. It’s true, sure, but the assumptions hurt. DC Universe Online feels your pain, hence the establishment of special places just for you to mingle with other villainous backstabbers in safety. (Well, as much safety as you can get in a room full of people who’d steal all of your valuables in a second if they thought they could get away with it.)

If you’re already intimately familiar with the game, of course, the newest trailer for the game isn’t going to convey much in the way of new information. But it shows some of the attention paid to the setting and the little details — and besides, who doesn’t like a chance to watch a man with a mohawk and a cape jump up and down on a mailbox? Click on past the break for the newest DC Universe Online trailer covering these hives of… no, never mind that part. Too obvious.

MoW starts off in standard fashion. You train troops, build buildings, send your hero on solo missions to level up, & figure out where you are in the world & how that will affect your city. I joined the Persians & found myself surrounded by fellow Persians. Plenty of browser games place you randomly on a map somewhere (an cheap balancing tactic if I ever saw one), but MoW lets you not only pick your side & whom you might be surrounded by but also move your city to become closer neighbors along with your friends.

I knew very small of Ministry of War before I played it. Honestly, I have very 75 browser games bookmarked on my PC right now, so plenty of of the titles kind of blend in. My plan of assault is to take one title per week & explore it, & over the last week I have been exploring the heck out of MoW. What I have found is a Flash-based empire-building game that appeared, at first, to offer nothing new. I have spent plenty of, plenty of hours building up armies & researching new technologies in countless games that look similar to MoW. I would bet that all of us have played some kind of RTS, & by this point, a new one would need to be thrilling to catch our eye.

As my city grew, so did my hero. I named him Beau (of work) & sent him on his way with an army of soldiers behind him. If I sent him in to battle, I could either control the battle myself using small figures that moved across the screen or permit the fight to play out automatically. I preferred to send him in to a fight & would read the document later. Players may even equip their heroes as they would any avatar in an MMO. In fact, the only thing missing from MoW is the ability to “drive” your hero avatar around a landscape using WASD.

    rappelz rupees
    maplestory mesos
    cheap wow gold for sale

The remainder of the city-building portion of the game felt very like an excellent toy set. Thanks to the excessively generous new player quests, I received a constant flow of goods & gold to grow my city with. Even as I played on & off all day, I never ran out of goods to build & experiment with. I also got free treasures in the kind of army boosts, experience potions, health potions, & plenty of, plenty of other types of goodies. MoW wishes you to keep playing, & the game showers you with items to do so.

The chat window was very helpful every time I asked a query, & plenty of players even offered to send me goods or protection if I needed it. Allowing players to join nations is fabulous because it builds camaraderie. In lieu of seeing in-fighting & ganking, I found myself surrounded by brothers & sisters who were enthusiastic to help out.

As I write this, my army continues to train. My fellow Persians have been planning a major assault, & they have been fighting off small armies of enemies all night. Meanwhile, I am trying to push my people in to the feudal age so that I can access better buildings & technologies, & my hero continues to level up. I even received five very nice pieces of equipment that are waiting for him in my storage.

Since MoW is Flash-based, it will run on any browser that can run Flash. I tested it on Firefox & Chrome & had no issues, but in Opera & Net Explorer the game had some small issues with re-sizing. Occasionally, I do get a log-in bug that provokes a refresh of the page, but usually the game runs beautifully on all of my compatible devices. My mighty, basic laptop computer of choice loved this game; it was ideal for playing while sitting in bed. There’s options to turn off floating titles & special effects as well, in case a player needs to reduce the strain on an older machine or netbook. Overall, the experience of MoW (so far) has been high-quality. It is persistent, interactive, very social, & obtainable — players can control it using but one finger.

So there you have it. I hope this new column will help to shed some light on the ever-growing style of browser-based gambling. I hope to mix it up a bit, offering something different each week. In the event you have any suggestions for great browser titles, leave them in the comments section. See you next week!

Keep in mind that I have not stepped in to the higher ranks of the game, nor have I experienced the money shop yet. My preliminary glances at the shop offerings revealed nothing but optional buffs & potions that are standard in money shops, but we’ll see the way it affects me five times I need it.

Joymax launches Silkroad Online expansion & new events

There is a ton of new functionality on display in Joymax’s free-to-play Silkroad Online MMORPG. The historical fantasy title, set along the renowned China to Constantinople trading route in the 7th century AD, has recently released its Rise of the Thief-Hunter expansion. Additionally, Joymax has added 24-hour GM support to the game & is hosting a series of events designed to draw awareness to the new services as well as solicit fan feedback (& offer prizes). Festivities include a share-your-knowledge event, a Fortress War video competition, & a Legendary Player tribute event.

    maplestory mesos
    flyff penya
    runescape gold

Rise of the Thief-Hunter also brings a newly designed crafting system granting players the ability to fabricate everything from siege items to alchemy staples. A brand spanking new trade system allows for players to explore their smugglery sides & offers quests that reward matchless job items. Players may also select to protect trade caravans or raid them. Check out the official Silkroad Online net site for more information on the expansion & associated events.

The expansion features a brand spanking new emphasis on jobs, & players will be able to specialise in new skill sets dependent on their characters’ jobs & levels. Job titles will also alter as various advancement tasks are completed, & reputation gain is now tied in with rank bonuses (which in turn raises attributes).

It is patch time for Earthrise, & the sci-fi sandbox from indie developer Masthead Studios is looking to put the hurt on a quantity of its early-release gremlins. The patch notes for version 17045 indicate that players ought to notice a substantial reduction in lag & an overall increase in server & client performance. The patch has also added keybinding functionality to the world of Enterra as well as animation tweaks for strafing & running.

Masthead adds exploration rewards to Earthrise, hints at player-crafted vehicles

Exploration rewards have also arrived in Earthrise, & players “will now be able to salvage materials & use them for either crafting or personal advantage.” The dev team is not stopping there, though, & producer Atanas Atanasov drops a couple of tasty hints regarding upcoming updates. “We are actively taking player feedback & requests in to consideration for future releases, & have extensive developments planned for completion in the next few months, including the addition of territorial conquests & player crafted vehicles,” they said by press release.

Perfect World Entertainment comments on 2011

Perfect World Entertainment is always busy. No, seriously — these guys and gals do not sleep. They now publish nearly 10 titles and show no sign of stopping. Their newest and largest title, Forsaken World, just hit open beta at the time of this writing, so we thought it might be a good idea to ask a few questions of the developers.

We tracked down PWE’s Clifton Chu, product manager for Forsaken World, to give us some info on the new game and the company’s MMO presence. If you have been excited to play it or any of the other titles in the Perfect World lineup, 2011 is going to be a very good year for you. Not only can you try out every title on its roster, but you can do it at your own pace. No subscription fee also means that you’ll have more money to blow in the cash shop. Hey, everyone needs vanity items!

Massively: As usual, you guys are really busy making games. Within your current line-up, however, which game takes up the most resources? Which is your flagship?

Clifton Chu: Out of our current game lineup, Perfect World International has been our flagship game to date, and we recently released the Genesis expansion for the game. As for which game takes up the most resources, it depends on timing, since we can be working on multiple expansions for different games at different times.

Forsaken World has just gone into open beta. Are you ready?

This has been our largest and longest closed beta to date, and with the help of an active closed beta community, we’ve been able to launch two weeks ahead of schedule. We’ve been putting the final touches and polish on Forsaken World and are confident that players will consider it well worth the wait come launch.

Graphically your games continue to get better and better, yet they still seem to keep generally the same system requirements. What’s the secret?

Necessity is the mother of all innovation. Since our games have to run on a variety of computers, we developed our own proprietary 3-D engine, Angelica, which does a great job in scaling graphics whether it’s on a computer in an Internet café or gaming machine at a LAN party. Forsaken World is the first game to be developed on the updated Angelica platform, and with future updates, we hope to upgrade all of our games based on the Angelica system to the same high-quality graphics.

Jonathan: My name is Jonathan. Most people refer to me as Ardua or Ardy nowadays. I occasionally weblog over on Echoes of Nonsense & was originally inspired to do so by one Justin Olivetti & WAAAGH! Fancy that!

The Game Archaeologist: Who are you? What would you like? Are you able to pimp your weblog?

So how did you first listen to about Earth & Beyond? Did you play any MMOs before it? What attracted you to it?

I like wargames, & I am a sci-fi geek. No seven ways about either of them. Naturally, I adored the Command & Conquer series, & I revealed about Earth & Beyond through the Westwood site. At the beginning, if memory serves, there were teaser images, but finally they launched a beta board. I had a name for my ship right away as it was the name I used on the beta boards in response to the Westwood/E&B tagline of “How far will you go?” Well… imagination’s finish. Cheesy, I do know.

Earth & Beyond was my first MMO in any way, shape or form. Spaceships? Online game? Always online? I was so hooked on the idea. I could not wait. It was reinforced by the fact that this was (for me & for the time) a large installation. So Westwood won my loyalty when they sent me a beta disc in the post. It appeared so foolish, but… living in Ireland all my life, & then being sent, personally, a duplicate of the game to help check, sent by the games company itself? I was in love. Also, I was on a modem still at that stage as the country didn’t have broadband.

What did you enjoy doing the most in the game: combat, trading or exploration?

How was Earth & Beyond different than other MMOs of its day? How did it stack up against EVE Online & Star Wars Galaxies’ Jump to Lightspeed?

Personally, I adored exploring. I decided to play a Jenquai Explorer, a Sha’ha’dem. The explorer class of an explorer race? Sign me right up. Of coursework, space was limited, but even so, I loved my ship, & I loved what I could do with it. Finally, because my particular class could wormhole a whole team from one area to another, I got in to the trade scene & found it enjoyable. Although I wasn’t immense on combat & was originally sold on exploration, even that turned out to be nice fun.

If I had to select one thing that I personally think E&B did better, it was likely the community feeling I had there compared to EVE, which was new to me & felt overwhelming & hazardous. EVE didn’t click for me then, but I did come around to it much later on.

How did it stack up? In some ways, I am not definite it did. EVE is still going strong now. Star Wars Galaxies had its own issues. Jump To Lightspeed never registered on my radar as something to be concerned about, but EVE definitely was. In fact, if I keep in mind correctly (& I am definite I will be corrected if I am wrong), the first Titan in EVE was built by a group ultimately founded by Celestial Horizon, a group of Earth & Beyond players who went to EVE.

As we learned yesterday, patch 1.16 for Final Fantasy XIV has gone live today, bringing along a much-awaited infusion of new content and mechanics. The full patch notes are fairly meaty, with the new sidequests and several improvements to local levequests topping the bill. Players will also see slower gear deterioration for appropriate equipment, enlarged enemies with visible aggro warnings, new targeting modes, constant regeneration of MP while in passive mode, and a variety of general improvements.

If that’s not enough, Naoki Yoshida has chimed in with another producer’s letter, this one discussing the results of the second player poll. Players have responded positively to the questions, and Yoshida interprets the results in great detail, with the ultimate conclusion that small-scale PvE content is in the works for groups, while solo leveling and solo content remains high on player agendas. It’s a busy day for Final Fantasy XIV’s fans, but given the recent development pace, it doesn’t look to be slowing.

Developer diary outlines the goals for Lord of the Rings Online’s upcoming raid

Raid design is as much an art as a science. Lord of the Rings Online is slated for a big update to its raiding game with the removal of the radiance mechanic, but that’s hardly the only feature in the queue for the upcoming patch. Ost Dunhoth is en route, and in a new developer diary, Joe Barry talks about some of the major changes that are being placed in the raid to make it fun and challenging in equal amounts.

Aside from the known fact that no radiance will be needed, the raid will also feature an automatic cooldown reset for each boss fight, ensuring that players won’t be prohibited from a second try by a recharging skill. The raid is also divided into three wings, with progress through the first two needed to unlock the third and final wing. Take a look at the full rundown of features in the diary entry, which also includes a few previews of the loot. And if you’re a Lord of the Rings Online player in Europe enticed by new content, well, there is a Welcome Back weekend running…

If there is been a single unifying thread for our last several beta giveaways for Mythos Europe, it is been a wail of anguish that the keys have vanished quickly. (Like cheap beer on a college campus, if you’d like an analogy.) But while they cannot conjure new keys out of narrow air, they can console those unable to get one with the news that the open beta is on its way. On April 12th, the servers open to everyone for testing and pleasure.

Open beta en route for Mythos Europe

For the open testing phase, the level cap is being raised to 50, giving players the chance to explore new abilities and new zones. The game’s third major area, Umbral Peaks, will be accessible in the last testing phase with the raised cap. Current beta players are also in luck, as servers have been added for several languages, including English, German, and Turkish. Mythos is getting closer and closer to launch, and beginning April 12th, everyone gets to participate in putting on the final pre-launch testing polish.

The Daily Grind: What MMO would you like to see covered more?

Let’s face it: Life is not fair, and as a result, every MMO in existence doesn’t get the same amount of coverage by the press, blogosphere, and fans. Some MMOs are more popular; some have much better PR reps; and some are basically newer than the rest.

Although they at Massively do try to make the rounds to cover as lots of MMOs as feasible, there’s always a few titles that appear to get noticed less than others. It is not uncommon for us to listen to from fans of a niche title, “Why haven’t you talked about GAME X for four years?” It is also not uncommon for lots of MMOs to basically be so calm as to negate any news at all.

So if wishes granted more coverage — not by us, but by everyone — what MMOs would you love to see get the spotlight more often? Perhaps it is an older title that is limping along with a skeleton dev team or a game that is a tiny more unconventional than the rest. Sound off: Be the voice that stands up for these MMOs!
